At school we are doing lots of new things everyday. We do at least 1 page of SW every day, and 1 page of HW nearly every day. Some of the things are new, others are a revision (at least for the children who were in Pre Junior at St Catherine’s). We are in the process of revising the letters and the sounds in English using the Jolly Phonics – many are familiar with the sounds and the song and the movement that goes with each sound. The new students got used to them quite quickly, because the songs have a nice tune, and we repeat them quite often.

However, now we are even joining the sounds to come up with words. Every Friday we have new words to study for the Spelling Game, but at school we also take the sounds (letters) that we have learnt so far and we try to come up with as many words as we can.

If you would like to help your child at home, you can play this game with your child…. You can take the cut letters that each child has in his / her HW folder; take out the sounds that we have done so far – s, a, t, p, i, n, c, k, e, h; and together try to find as many words as you can. Each word has to have the special letter in red (vowel), to help join the letters together to form a word. There are 3 letter words, and also some 4 letter words. If you want to you can write the words on a paper, or a special project book, and your child can bring it to school to show us in class.

Another game is trying to find objects at home which start with the sounds we have done so far, e.g. ‘table’. Or even, find pictures from a magazine, or computer, that end with the sounds we have done so far, e.g. ‘map’ finishes with the sound ‘p’.

This extra reinforcement from home, will definitely help your child.

The children have HW from the English Literacy Booklet. Some children don`t have the booklet with them, as I had kept it to show the children the nice work that they did (of the letter ‘p’), and then we ran out of time. Will give it to them tomorrow (Friday) and they can do it over the weekend.
Thanks.

The children are out for PE, and I decided to write this quick post!

The children and I just did a Literacy Lesson(English). From the cut letters that the children have in their folders, we used the 6 letters that we have done so far… s, a, t, p, i, n. And in groups, the children had to use these 6 letters to come up with different words.

The kids did amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They came up with all these 3 letter words:
sat, pin, sit, pat, tin, pat, sin, tap, tan, sip, pan, nap, sap.

And also 4 letter words:
span, spit, spat, spin, pins, pans, past.

I was impressed. WELL DONE!

Also then the children actually read a page from their Classwork Literacy Booklet:-

Pat the Cat
Pat is a cat.
The cat has a can.
An ant is in the can.
Pat kicks the can.
The ant is out of the can.
The cat and the ant sit on the can.

I am so proud of Junior 1A. Excellent work kids today. Keep it up!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you want to at home, you can also take the 6 letters (s, a, t, p, i, n) and play around to come up with words – how many words can you come up with?!

We are in the process of learning the letters and the sounds of the English alphabet, using the Jolly Phonics. So far we have done the ‘s’, ‘a’, ‘t’, ‘i’, ‘p’ and ‘n’. Apart from learning the sounds, we are also focusing on the correct formation, and to write them within the lines.
Here are some pictures of the letter ‘s’ that we hang in class whenever we do a letter:

Also here is a video with all the letters and the corresponding songs. We play these in class, and each sound has its movement too:
